Stair Tread Installation Procedures
Before You Begin: Remove any carpet, staples, etc. from your stairs and ensure the treads are clean, flat and dry.
- Starting at the bottom step, carefully measure width and depth of the step. Cut (print side up) the stair tread to size and dry-fit to ensure a proper fit. Measure and cut each stair and stair tread separately as they may be different. Use painter’s tape on the cut line before cutting to prevent chatter at the cut edge of your tread.
- Adhesive may be applied around edge of tread OR full spread on stair.
- If applying adhesive to edge of tread: Apply a 1/4″ bead of PVC trim construction adhesive about 1″ from the edges and in a serpentine pattern with approximately 1.5″ of space between each line. Add a generous amount of adhesive into the bullnose as well.
- If applying adhesive full spread on stair: Apply PSA trim adhesive to entire tread substrate per glue manufacturers application instructions. Recommend 1/16″ square notched trowel or 3/8″ nap roller. Ensure a generous amount is applied to the bullnose as well.

- Starting at the bottom step, carefully position the stair tread on the step approximately 1″ from the riser and slide into place. Apply firm pressure to tread surface and follow the adhesive manufacturers’ application guidelines. Remove any excess adhesive immediately! Secure the stair tread along the back edge (riser edge) with finishing nails placed 1/2″ from riser and 10 – 12″ apart to prevent shifting while adhesive cures. Allow sufficient dry time (as recommended by the adhesive manufacturer) before using your steps.
If your existing tread has a square end (no bullnose) make sure the tread is flush as shown below.

The round nosing is designed to be installed with “relief” at the edge as shown below.

Stair Riser Installation Procedures
- Starting at the top step, measure the height and width of the riser.
- Using a miter and table saw, cut the riser to the necessary measurements.
- Dry fit to ensure a snug fit. (Do NOT force into place).
- Using Bruce Glue Assist Pro Adhesive or urethane based construction adhesive, apply a generous “intermittent” bead around the perimeter of the riser and then throughout the middle in a serpentine pattern.
- Carefully slide your riser into place so it is flush. Push firmly on the riser. (Immediately remove any excess adhesive).
Note: When installing risers on an open-end step, it will be necessary to use a piece of molding to cover the exposed edge.
